514th Fighter Squadron, Phuong Hoang (Phoenix)
The first Fighter squadron was activated at Bien Hoa on 1 June 1956, operating 25 Grumman F8F-1 Bearcats. The squadron was redesignated to 514th Fighter Squadron in 1963, when it received Douglas A-1H Skyraiders to replace the Bearcats. The A-1s where put in storage after the Paris peace agreements, but were later made operational again and remained in use until the fall of Saigon. Some escaped to Thailand U-Tapao air base.
516th Fighter Squadron, Phi Ho (Flying Tiger)
The first Fighter squadron was activated at Nha Trang in December 1961, operating T-28 Trojans. The squadron was redesignated to 516th Fighter Squadron in 1963, when it received Douglas A-1H Skyraiders to replace the Trojans. The A-1s where later replaced with A-37B Dragonflies.
518th Fighter Squadron, Phi Long (Flying Dragon)
The 518th Fighter Squadron was activated at Bien Hoa air base on 15 October 1963, operating A-1 Skyraiders.
520th Fighter Squadron
The 520th FS was activated at Bien Hoa air base on 16 June 1964 with A-1 Skyraiders. In August 1964 it moved to Binh Thuy and converted to A-37B Dragonflies.
522nd Fighter Squadron
The 522nd Fighter Squadron was activated at Tan Son Nhut air base on 1 April 1965, operating A-1H Skyraiders. The squadron moved to Bien Hoa, was re-activated on June 1st 1967 and re-equipped with F-5 Freedom Fighters. This squadron was part of the mysterious 83rd Special Operations Group and was considered to be the elite squadron of the VNAF. The "face" of the VNAF, Marshall Cao Ky was commander of this squadron earlier in his carreer. The 522nd also provided pilots and maintenance for the 716th Reconnaissance Squadron's inventory of RF-5As.
524th Fighter Squadron, Thien Loi
The 524th Fighter Squadron was activated on 15 September 1965, operating A-1 Skyraiders which were replaced by A-37Bs in March 1969. The squadron moved to Phan Rang on an unknown date.
526th Fighter Squadron
The 526th Fighter Squadron was activated at Binh Thuy air base in 1969, flying A-37B Dragonflies.
528th Fighter Squadron, Ho Cap
The 528th Fighter Squadron was activated at Da Nang on 1 December 1970, operating A-37B Dragonflies.
530th Fighter Squadron, Thai Duong (Jupiter)
The 530th Fighter Squadron was activated at Pleiku on 1 December 1970, operating A-1 Skyraiders.
532nd Fighter Squadron
The 532nd Fighter Squadron was activated at Phu Cat air base, operating A-37B Dragonflies. It later moved to Pleiku air base.
534th Fighter Squadron
The 534th Fighter Squadron was activated at Phan Rang air base on 1 November 1972, operating A-37B Dragonflies.
536th Fighter Squadron
The 536th Fighter Squadron was activated at Bien Hoa air base in December 1972, operating F-5A Freedom Fighters, which were joined by F-5E Tiger IIs in June 1974.
538th Fighter Squadron
The 538th Fighter Squadron was activated at Da Nang air base, operating F-5A Freedom Fighters.
540th Fighter Squadron
The 540th Fighter Squadron was activated at Bien Hoa air base, operating F-5A Freedom Fighters. This squadron also received F-5E Tiger IIs.
542nd Fighter Squadron
The 542nd Fighter Squadron was activated at Bien Hoa air base, operating F-5A Freedom Fighters.
544th Fighter Squadron
The 544th Fighter Squadron was activated at Bien Hoa air base, operating F-5A Freedom Fighters.
546th Fighter Squadron
The 546th Fighter Squadron was activated at Binh Thuy air base, operating A-37B Dragonflies.
548th Fighter Squadron, O Den (Black Eagle)
The 548th Fighter Squadron was activated at Phan Rang air base, operating A-37B Dragonflies.
550th Fighter Squadron
The 550th Fighter Squadron was activated at Da Nang air base, operating A-37B Dragonflies.
