F-5A, 522nd FS

Hoang Gia Vien is standing next to his F-5A s/n 65-10544 of to the 542nd FS. It sustained a direct hit from an SA-7 Strella hand-held shoulder-fired missile, but still managed to make it home. The airplane got hit in March of 1975 after it dropped bombs and pulled off at Black Virgin Mountain, Tay Ninh province, about 50 miles west of Bien Hoa airbase. The pilot flew this airplane back and landed safely with a single engine and no hydraulic system for brakes. The tail code HJK is a fine example of the later-war style codes implemented by the VNAF. Not much is known about this system. (Photo: Northrop via Peter Mikolajski).
