AC-47D, 817th AS

Nice study of a VNAF AC-47D Dakota. Note the absence of the white star in the national insignia. If this was just forgotten or if it was intentionally done to make the plane less conspicuous at night is not known. (all photos: U.S. Air Force Museum)

These gunships provided awesome firepower and were respected by both friend and foe. The VNAF crews were not in for a one-year tour like their American counterparts. They were in for the duration and they flew more missions than any USAF crew. This meant that VNAF crews had become extremely proficient in operating the Spooky, and ground commanders often preferred a VNAF Spooky over a USAF one because of this.

It must have been horrifying to be on the receiving end of these gunships. Hearing the sound of the miniguns (which sounded like cloth being ripped) meant you survived the first burst, but must have terrified them beyond words because there was more to come for sure.
